AquaFlux Accessories

We have worked with users to develop accessories that adapt the AquaFlux to different measurements needs. A number of examples are shown below, to indicate the range of possibilities. Please ask, if you have a different requirement.

Measurement Caps

Illustrated below are the cap designs that have found use in practice. Note that instrument sensitivity is affected by cap design. You correct for this by entering the Biox-supplied Cap Calibration Factor in the software.

All caps are precision machined from hard Teflon for durability and high chemical resistance. They can be sterilised at autoclave temperatures as high as 250°C.

Part No. AF005-01
Standard Measurement Cap

The standard measurement caps have an orifice diameter of 7mm and are used for routine TEWL & SSWL measurement. Their truncated cone design leaves a contact mark on the skin to help with re-positioning the probe in repeat measurements. Two standard caps are included with each instrument.

Part No. AF005-02
Calibration Cap

These caps seal the measurement chamber. You use these for initial stabilisation, for zero-flux baseline setting and for flux density calibration by the droplet method. Two calibration caps are included with each instrument.

Part No. AF005-03
Reduced Orifice Cap

Reduced orifice caps were designed for high flux measurements, as encountered in perspiration research, for example. This cap has a 3mm diameter orifice, with which flux densities as high as 250 g/(sq.m h) can be measured with the AF200. Note also the domed shape of the contact surface, which eliminates the contact mark left on the skin by the standard truncated cone cap design.

Part No. AF005-04
Slotted Cap

Slotted caps were developed for scalp research, where the slot can be aligned with the hair parting to enable TEWL measurements to be performed without the need for shaving.

Part No. AF005-05
Tube Cap

Tube caps were developed to facilitate measurements in places that are difficult to reach with conventional caps, such as the nasolabial area, for example.

Part No. AF005-06
Funnel Cap

Funnel caps were developed to measure average TEWL over an extended area. This one has a contact area of 17mm diameter.

Part No. AF005-07
Nail Cap

Nail caps are fitted with a rubber O-ring that deforms to seal against hard, uneven surfaces such as a fingernail.

Desorption Caps

These are closed caps that are used for measuring the desorption properties of samples pre-conditioned in atmospheres of known humidity.

Click here for a pdf showing some examples of their use.

Part No. AF106-01 (5mm)
Part No. AF106-02 (10mm)
Part No. AF106-03 (15mm)
Part No. AF106-04 (20mm)
Part No. AF106-05 (25mm)
Part No. AF106-06 (30mm)
Part No. AF106-07 (35mm)

These caps are closed and contain cylindrical sample wells with a bore diameter of 7mm and depths shown above. Other geometries to special order.

Franz Cell Donor Chamber Couplings

These accessories couple different designs of Franz cell donor chambers to the AquaFlux measurement head. A leak-tight seal is essential for accurate membrane integrity assessment, as shown in our recent publication at the Atlanta ISBS meeting. Click here for a pdf of the presentation. Below are shown two examples - ask if you need a coupling to a different cell.

Part No. AF007-01
Coupling adaptor for Permegear 9mm Donor Chamber

This adaptor seals to the inner cylindrical surface of the donor chamber by means of a rubber O-ring.

Part No. AF007-02
Coupling adaptor for LGA Type LG-1084-SPC Donor Chamber

This adaptor seals to the outer cylindrical surface of the donor chamber by means of a rubber O-ring.

Transpiration Accessories

These accessory convert the AquaFlux into an instrument for measuring water vapour transpiration through membranes. The method is similar to the ASTM-96 standard method, but uses flux sensing rather than weight loss measurement. This speeds up the measurements and provides detailed information about dynamic changes during the approach to steady-state transpiration.

Part No. AF008-01
Nail Transpiration Accessory

The accessory consists of a stainless steel clamp to seal nail clippings onto the AquaFlux measurement head. The orifice diameter is 3mm and the clamp can accommodate nail clippings as small as 5mm diameter. The funnel is used to add water to the top side of the nail. Use it to measure transpiration and diffusion delay.

Click here for a pdf showing some examples of its use.

Part No. AF008-02
Transpiration Accessory

The accessory consists of a clamp to seal the membrane into the water vapour path, with an AquaFlux measurement head above and a standard 250mL wide-mouth glass jar below. The membrane clamp can accommodate sample diameters in the range 10 - 51mm and sample thicknesses up to 5mm. The jar can be filled with water or a saturated salt solution to control the source humidity. A thermostatted water bath (not supplied) can be used to provide further control of source conditions.
